  • Personal Finance

Whether you are working towards a promotion at work or trying to improve your relationships with your friends and family, I think these books will help you develop into a better person this year.

LEADERSHIP

1. Creativity, Inc. by Ed Catmull

In Creativity, Inc., Ed Catmull tells the story of the challenges he faced while founding Pixar and then eventually merging with Disney Animation. This book demonstrates how treating employees as the number one resource of a company leads to amazing creative work. Ed found that if you empower all employees, they will work hard to meet deadlines and complete projects under budget. This is a great read for any leader who wants to develop successful teams.

“Unleashing creativity requires that we loosen the controls, accept risk, trust our colleagues, work to clear the path for them, and pay attention to anything that creates fear.” – Ed Catmull

When looking to hire people, give their potential to grow more weight than their current skill level. What they will be capable of tomorrow is more important than what they can do today.” – Ed Catmull

Failure isn’t a necessary evil. In fact, it isn’t evil at all. It is a necessary consequence of doing something new.” – Ed Catmull

In Extreme Ownership, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin reflect on their time as U.S. Navy Seals and highlight how that experience can transfer into working in the corporate world as a leader. This book explains all the facets of what makes a great team. After reading, you will want to stop making excuses – leaders must own everything, there is no one else to blame.

“Implementing Extreme Ownership requires checking your ego and operating with a high degree of humility. Admitting mistakes, taking ownership, and developing a plan to overcome challenges are integral to any successful team.” – Jocko Willink

“Leaders must always operate with the understanding that they are part of something greater than themselves and their own personal interests.” – Jocko Willink

“The most fundamental and important truths at the heart of Extreme Ownership: there are no bad teams, only bad leaders.” – Jocko Willink

3. Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire to Take Action by Simon Sinek

In Start with Why, Simon Sinek explains why it is important to “practice what you preach” as a leader. In other words, people follow leaders that inspire them with a sense of purpose – a “why.” This is another great book if you are managing a team of people.

“There are only two ways to influence human behavior: you can manipulate it or you can inspire it.” – Simon Sinek

“We are drawn to leaders and organizations that are good at communicating what they believe. Their ability to make us feel like we belong, to make us feel special, safe and not alone is part of what gives them the ability to inspire us.” – Simon Sinek

“Leading is not the same as being the leader. Being the leader means you hold the highest rank, either by earning it, good fortune or navigating internal politics. Leading, however, means that others willingly follow you—not because they have to, not because they are paid to, but because they want to.” – Simon Sinek

In The 4-Hour Workweek, Tim Ferris outlines how he was able to quit his job and create his own business that operates with minimal time spent each week. While I don’t agree with everything in the book, I think it is worth reading in order to inspire you to brainstorm creative ways you can automate or spend less time doing unproductive things at your work or in your personal life.

“Success tends to bless those who are most committed to giving it the most attention.” – Grant Cardone

“Think about it: What’s the worst thing that can happen to you if you just totally go for it?” – Grant Cardone

COMMUNICATION

In Never Split the Difference, Chris Voss gives us insights into his career as an FBI hostage negotiator and explains how we can use what he learned while in the FBI in our own negotiations, whether they’re happening at work or personal life. “Negotiate in their world. Persuasion is not about how bright or smooth or forceful you are. It’s about the other party convincing themselves that the solution you want is their own idea. So don’t beat them with logic or brute force. Ask them questions that open paths to your goals. It’s not about you.” – Chris Voss

“The single most important factor to getting rich is getting started, not being the smartest person in the room.” – Ramit Sethi
